It is with profound sadness that we announce the death of our dearly-loved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend. Mary passed away in Victoria on Friday, December 21, 2012 surrounded by her family.
The eldest daughter of Margaret and Thomas Campbell, Mary was born in Stevenston, Scotland on December 15, 1913. She was predeceased by siblings Jack, Joe, Tom, Gerard, Arthur, Rita, Andrew and Madeleine. Mary also lost her husband Edmund in 1977, her grandson Zachary in 1992 and her older son Edmund (Elizabeth) in 2003. She is survived by her sister Theresa (Carmelite Sister Margaret of Jesus) of Dumbarton, Scotland. Marys oldest daughter Marga (Sister Mary of the Holy Spirit) is Prioress of the Carmelite Monastery in Dumbarton. Her other children, Patricia (Henning), Kate, Joan, Anne (Larry) and Steve (Laurie), all reside in B.C.
Mum was dedicated to her Family and her Faith. With joy and commitment she raised her siblings on the early loss of her own mother when she was a young teen. She surrounded her own children with the same love throughout their lives and later was lovingly involved in the lives of her grandchildren Michael (Esmeralda) and Matt (Kate) Hansen, Zachary, Christiana (Jed Hyde), Aaron (Andrea), Dan and Dave Hersog, and great-grandchildren Talia Glover and Noah and Harlan Glover-Hyde.
Mary with her husband and children moved from Perth, Scotland to Saint John, New Brunswick in 1958 and in 1968 returned to Scotland, finally settling in Victoria, B.C. in 1971. She became a Eucharistic Minister and Reader at St. Andrews Cathedral and sang with the cathedral choir for many years. It was her choir and church community that provided her with great friendships which endured for many years.
We are grateful to the staff of James Bay Care Centre, especially for their care of Mary in her final days.
We are comforted that Mary is finally at peace; we will miss her terribly and will love her forever.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at 12:00 on Wednesday, January 2 at St. Andrews Roman Catholic Cathedral on View Street in Victoria. A reception will follow in the church hall. Interment will take place at Hatley Gardens in Colwood at 3 p.m.
