Obituary of Phyllis LUKE
Luke, Anne (1929-2017): Phyllis Anne Luke died on November 16, 2017 after a long and happy life and a short illness from which she was unable to recover.
Born to Kathleen and Walter Ross in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 1929, Anne attended Our Lady of Sion Academy and enjoyed summers at Emma Lake and trips to California to visit her grandparents. She moved with her family to Victoria in 1947, attended Victoria College, worked for the provincial government, and married Jim in 1950. In December of 1954, while Anne was just 25 years old, she and Jim embarked on a new adventure, moving with their two small children to England, then Northern Ireland. Anne was an enthusiastic partner and a keen supporter of her husband’s naval career. Returning to Canada in 1957 the family spent ten happy years in Dartmouth NS where Anne forged many lifelong friendships. In 1967, they returned to Victoria where they produced their last and best work, Karen, and launched into another new chapter of their lives focused on children and education. During this time, Anne mentored many young mothers who were grateful for her sage advice and was an attentive and loving caregiver to her aging mother. A lifelong and faithful servant of the Anglican Church, Anne was a member of the Church of St. John the Divine community for more then 40 years.
Anne was an old soul. She drew people to her with her wisdom, kindness, compassion, patience, good sense, humour, and acceptance. There was nothing Anne liked more than to chat on the phone with family and friends, her melodious laugh punctuating all conversations. She was also a progressive thinker who loved music, history, gardens, decorating, fine food, movies, books, and all things beautiful. But most of all she adored her sweetheart and best friend, Jimmy, who pre-deceased her by three years.
Anne was the mother everyone wanted. She loved her children unconditionally; in turn, she was much loved by her family and friends. Grateful for her legacy of kindness and missing her are her children Chris (Colleen), Catherine, Karen (Paul), granddaughters Maradith (Justin), Shawnessy (Allison), and Vienna (Jordan), grandsons Thomas and Eli, great grandsons Harrison, Miles, Trace, and Barrett, and great granddaughter Marlowe. Anne’s family is grateful for the gentle care she received at Victoria General Hospital, especially from Dr. Wessels, Troy, and Antoinette, and for the perfect companionship of Joanne Morgan who lived with her during her final months.
A memorial service will be held at 2 pm on December 2, 2017 at the Church of St. John the Divine, 1611 Quadra St, Victoria, followed by a reception
