With heavy hearts, we announce the death of Randy Kowalchuk of Victoria, BC, who passed away on September 29, 2021 at the age of 65. He was predeceased by: his first wife Pamela (Inglis) Kowalchuk; his parents, Nickolas and Hilda Kowalchuk; and his sister Deb Kowalchuk. He is survived by his wife Laurie (Klammer) Kowalchuk; his daughter Kelsey Kowalchuk; and his siblings, Cathy Burgess, Sharon Kowalchuk, Doug Kowalchuk, and Brian Kowalchuk. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
Randy was born May 28, 1956 in Regina, Sask and was a huge Rider's fan. It was while he attended Miller High School, he discovered his love of all genres of music by playing the trumpet in the school band. Randy's love of NASA and all things Space related started when he watched the Apollo 11 moon landing in 1969, which is evident in his book and miniatures collection. This extended into his love of gardening and farming where he spent a large portion of his childhood in his grandmother's garden and on his Uncle's farm. In 1994, he started to learn the Art of Bonsai when his wife Laurie told him he could not plant any more trees in the yard. This led to a lifelong hobby that they both enjoyed immensely. Randy also enjoyed woodworking and made beautiful handcrafted pens. He also loved photography, especially taking photos of his bonsai and the flowers he grew in his backyard.
Randy will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and all those who shared the same interests in his hobbies. We will also miss his wealth of knowledge that he loved to share with anyone who wanted to talk about Bonsai, Gardening, NASA, and Woodworking.
Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Canadian Red Cross Community Service on behalf of Randal Kowalchuk.
