HELEN DORA OLSON (nee Proppe)
October 15, 1933 - August 8, 2021
We are profoundly sad to announce the passing of our beautiful mom Helen. Mom was born
and raised in Prince George and after venturing off to Vancouver for career college she returned
to Prince George and met and married Bud Olson. Together they had 3 children who became
the centre of her world. There was never a moment that we doubted how much mom loved us.
Happily ever after wasn’t in the cards for mom and dad and with great courage not common in
those days, mom forged a new future for her and her young children. She returned to work in a
clerical position with BC Forest Services and worked her way up, eventually retiring as Manager
of Finance and Administration with the Ministry of Environment in 1988. Mom never sacrificed
her family for work, nor work for family - she simply did it all.
Mom was amazing, she was a rock, and the very heart and soul of our family. To her family was
everything and she had a close bond with her siblings and a special place in her heart for her
nieces and nephews. Mom’s home was always a welcoming place for family and friends to seek
advice, a shoulder to cry on or to gather and share laughs, good food and drink.
In 1990 Mom made the brave decision to leave her life in Prince George and start again in
Victoria where she would be closer to her children. Mom had the most beautiful smile and with
her kind heart and warm ways she was quickly embraced by her new home town. Mom had an
active social life with her golf and bridge friends but the highest priority was family, especially
her grandchildren who she adored. Mom was always there for her grandchildren’s important
events and sporting activities and was their biggest cheerleader.
Mom married Don Hendry in 2000 and her extended family grew as she welcomed Don’s
children Brad, Gregg and Carla and their families into her heart. Mom and Don enjoyed many
years of travel and companionship and their home became the hub of family gatherings.
Mom is survived by her husband Don and family, her sister Dorothy (Len Thony) and her
children Danny (Madeline McDonald), Diana (John deWitt) and Connie (John Hamilton), her
grandchildren Nolan, Austin, Kyla, Taylor, Matthew and Kendra, and many nieces and nephews
and their families.
We wish to express our heartfelt gratitude to the staff at The Heights for providing a home away
from home for mom in her last few months. Mom now joins her beloved parents Leonard and
Helen and her brothers Harry and George. We are comforted that they are together.
A private gathering to celebrate mom’s life will be held at a later date.
