Janice Mary Edith Calnan, RN, BA, MEd, Reg. Cert. Counsellor, RHB
[January 3, 1944 to January 4, 2020]
Janice passed away in the loving arms of her daughter Rebecca and with her doggy Tika cuddled at her feet. Not one to miss cake, her spirit left her body on the morning after her 76th birthday, with loving words of her dearest family and friends floating in all week to fill her heart. She will join her first-born Colleen Louise McPhail to explore the great beyond, along with her parents Frederick and Pearl Calnan, beloved aunts and uncles Harry & Gwen Angrignon, John & Kay Frances, Mona Fishburn, and cherished loved one David Verway.
Janice's life passions and career sought to help people and organizations find their inner light and best potential. From her early days as a paediatric nurse then nursing teacher, counsellor, leadership trainer, organizational change agent, author and motivational speaker, Janice was a deeply spiritual person. Janice stood for feminist and humanist values and was always happiest in the delight of children, animals and nature. She was an incredibly intentional and supportive mother and friend, a much as a talented artist with a dry and cheeky wit. She sparked action and change in her communities and work circles from Hamilton to Montreal, Toronto, Michigan, Florida and Victoria. Her opus was her book "Shift: secrets of positive change for organizations and their leaders" (2001) and accompanying leadership practicum https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lS7-VsPEIoM.
Janice is survived by her adoring daughter Rebecca McPhail Mellett, devoted son-in-law Russell Mellett and doting grandson Natnael (step-grands Ian, Kerry, Andy as well as her step-daughters who she loved : Gail, Lynn and Jane). She cherished her cousins Shelley and Kris, as well as her dearest friends which she considered as extended family including Doug, Julie, Norma, Yvonne, Alice, Connie and Mary Kay. Sincerest gratitude for the dear care and friendship of Mt. St. Mary staff and volunteers.
You may call on her anytime in your own ways.
Until we meet again xoxox
GIFTS AND DONATIONS: as Janice was always appreciative of the value of immaterial things such as being together or sharing a laugh, on her behalf we ask friends and family to think of a symbolic way to honour her spirit by supporting and being with someone you love. Use your intention to help yourself and them be your best selves (à la Janice!). Recognizing her interest in lifelong learning, the family will develop a scholarship in Janice's name at her alma mater McGill to support graduate studies in women's leadership.
Celebrations of Janice’s life will be held in Victoria in January and in Ontario in July. Dates and details to be announced, please click on left menu "subscribe" to receive an automated update when the dates are confirmed.
