It is with great sadness that we announce that Robert John (Bob) Culm of Victoria, B.C. passed away in his sleep at home on Saturday November 9th, 2019 at age 62 after a long and heroic battle with cancer. He will be deeply missed by his beloved partner Wynter Elaine Langston and leaves the legacy of his life to his son Michael John and daughter Suzanne and grandsons Gabriel and Aiden.
Bob was born in Etobicoke, Ontario to Bill and Verda Culm on September 29th, 1957, the 6th of seven children. Bob grew up in Pointe Claire, Quebec. He then moved to be near the ocean in both British Columbia and New Brunswick.
He worked for Bell Canada in Toronto, for the B.C. government, then as a computer programmer and IT troubleshooter for Sierra Systems in B.C., and Centerbeam in New Brunswick. While living in Grand Bay, NB he designed and built his first home. He was a commercial geoduck clam diver and later ran his own scallop harvesting business aboard his boat, Scalypso in B.C. As a Nikken Wellness Consultant, he inspired and made a difference in many people’s lives with his heart, humour, understanding and compassion.
Bob was an avid and accomplished fisherman. It was his passion and favourite pastime. He volunteered his time in many ways, one of which was designing the website for The Esquimalt Anglers’ Association where he was President and IT consultant. He spent many summers with Wynter in their special place at Port Renfrew Marina and RV Park and on their boat “Big C Hunter” , catching large salmon, halibut, ling cod, and crab. Bob used his special brine recipe to smoke portions of his catch that he generously shared with family and friends.
He is preceded in death by his sister Marilyn Scadding and his parents Bill and Verda Culm.
Much loved brother of Diane (Len) Ladoucer, Pat (Martin) Hodgson, David (Suad) Culm, Valerie Macpherson and Sharon (Bob) Helmes; nephews Andrew & Jonathan Culm, John Scadding; nieces Taylor & Emily Helmes and Leslie (Scadding) Brobst; cousins Glenn Newcombe and Marilyn Crawford.
Also survived by his children's mother Mhairi Anderson as well as his second wife Kelly.
Bob is fondly remembered by many friends who shared good times with Bob in Pointe Claire Quebec, Haliburton Lake Ontario, and Tofino, Victoria, Nanaimo, Sooke, and Port Renfrew, B.C.
A Celebration of Life will be held in honour of Bob on December 5th; 3 PM at The Esquimalt Anglers’ Association Clubhouse, 1101 Munro St., Victoria, B.C. V9A 5P1.
A brass community wall plaque will be dedicated in Bob’s memory.
Cremation has taken place.
In lieu of flowers, as an expression of sympathy, memorial donations may be made to a charity of your choice and would be appreciated by the family.
When we look out onto an ocean or lake, we will remember our Bob and his love of fishing and the outdoors. As Bob would say: “Tight Lines and Sharp Hooks! Get out on the water and catch a big one!”
