Catherine Margaret Baker (nee Stewart), 74, of Victoria, British Columbia, died comfortably at home with her family on August 8th, 2018 after a short and hard-fought battle with cancer. Born September 7th, 1943 in Ottawa, Ontario, Catherine, the oldest of 3 daughters, spent the majority of her childhood in Winnipeg, Manitoba, before moving to British Columbia, where she resided in Trail, Vancouver and finally, Victoria. Catherine is survived by her two sisters: Barbara Anne Corser and Susan Carroll Gershman and her three children: Trevor David Baker, Jeffrey Grant Baker and Lindsay Catherine Knazan, and four grandchildren: Hudson, Jayden, Sawyer and Piper.
Catherine attended the University of Manitoba before her first job at Manitoba Hydro where she worked in the financial services department. Catherine returned to her finance and accounting career at Chevron and then upon the family’s move to Victoria with the Ministry of Children and Families, where she spent the bulk of the next two decades. Catherine loved her team and her work for MCFD and was known throughout the Ministry for her “Canucks Corner”. Upon retirement, Catherine spent her time with family and with her companion Eric Elin, travelling the world and enjoying the cruising lifestyle. Their travels took them through the Panama Canal and through the South Pacific among other exotic locations.
Catherine went out of her way to help many people in life, though she did not seek the limelight for doing so. She preferred to quietly attend to things in the background and her actions touched many people’s lives, though they may not always have been aware of it. Catherine’s main focus was her love for her children. She loved puppies, knitting, watching sports, particularly hockey and rugby, and reading. Catherine was a prolific collector of items in her life and leaves behind a substantial collection of wool which she has generously donated to Berwick House Retirement Home where they are now in good supply for the next many, many years.
Catherine will be interred at a private service at Royal Oak Burial Park and an open house memorial will be held at 4233 Cheverage Place, Victoria on Saturday August 18th at 1pm. The family wishes to thank the wide circle of friends, both old and new who made the palliative process a time of laughter, warmth and compassion, and who surrounded the family with love throughout.
In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the BCSPCA, the Red Cross or Victoria Hospice on behalf of Catherine Baker.
