Obituary of Samuel BUSBY
Samuel “Lorne” Busby, an exceptional human, husband, father, grandpa, and friend passed peacefully at the age of 93. In the early evening of April 6th, 2018 Lorne took his last breath at the Victoria General hospital in the warm company of his loving wife of 59 years Phyllis Busby, their daughter Karen Thomas and her family. He was a man who loved deeply and was so deeply loved by his family and all those who knew him.
Lorne was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan in 1925. Son of Gordon and Helen Busby, and oldest brother to Jack, Beryl, Jay, Beverly and Joyce. He was a highly motivated and hard working man proving himself through school and later becoming a highly celebrated member of the Regina Rifles. Lorne spent many of his younger years overseas with a focus on helping others and building connections.
When he arrived back in Canada he wasted no time, enrolling in a training program with Richardson Greensheilds in Edmonton. With great success and praise he worked with the company in Edmonton, Kenora, Prince George, and Victoria for 32 years until his retirement (1955-1987).
In September of 1958 he married his sweetheart Phyllis Edgecombe. They created a wonderful life together from the night they first met at a YMCA dance, they enjoyed many joy filled trips and adventures together. In 1964 another gift came into their lives with the arrival of their daughter Karen. Lorne and Phyllis could not have been happier. They moved between Kenora, Prince George and Victoria; finding “home” everywhere they went.
In retirement Lorne and his wife Phyllis dedicated their lives to their family, moving to be close to their daughter Karen and son in law Bruce. They welcomed the arrival of their grandchildren Katrina and Kevin with great enthusiasm and pride. Lorne was the most incredible dad, grandpa, friend and role model one could ask for. He always had a fun story, adventure or task to share; celebrating his family in everything he did.
He found enjoyment and community at the local skating rinks and when he was younger enjoyed tennis and swimming with great ability.
He grew old comfortably, close to family with his wife in Victoria, B.C.
Lorne Busby became a bit of a “buzz” word in the communities he was a part of. His infectious positivity and charm always inspiring the same in others. There was a most humble, respectful, honouring way that he carried himself through each day. He was a brilliant conversationalist with a keen desire to learn and see the world from all angles, always offering ears to listen to any story, idea or theory anyone had to offer. He would listen with honest interest, presence and an open mind. He celebrated the people around him, always reminding them that they were loved and taken care of. He took great pleasure in the company of his family, books, writing, music, good food, and nature; sharing his gratitudes often.
Lorne Busby will always be remembered with love, joy and gratitude; he was a man connected to many. His presence will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
If you wish to share your appreciation or memories of Lorne Busby, you are invited to join his family for a celebration of his life on Saturday, April 28th at 1:00 pm in the Social Room at Montague House (3133 Tillicum road) parking at the Tillicum centre.
